How to Clean At-Home Workout Equipment

Jun 21, 2021

Skip the heavy lifting and reach for these Laundress solutions to clean at-home workout gear like stationary bikes, mats, weights, and bands without breaking a sweat! With these effective, plant-derived formulas, you’ll be able to keep your focus on your form and #goals, instead of grime and odors.

Stationary Bikes and Ellipticals

Your Toolkit: Surface Cleaner, Glass & Mirror Cleaner, Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth

While you’re spinning towards success on the scoreboard, things can get sweaty! Post-workout, grab our Surface Cleaner formula, spray some on to a Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, and swipe it over stationary bikes and ellipticals, making sure to target the seat, handlebars, and levers. It’s a good idea to always give equipment a quick wipedown after each ride to avoid heavy buildup and odors. (Pssst: The plant-derived Surface Cleaner formula works well throughout the home, from the gym to the kitchen, and can be used to address surfaces of all kinds, including steel, hard plastic, and marble.) To clean your machine’s screen, reach for our Glass & Mirror Cleaner. This ammonia-free formula is non-streaking and unscented for a residue-free shine!

Workout Mats

Your Toolkit: Scented Vinegar, Glass Spray Bottle, Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, Surface Cleaner, Sport Detergent

It can be hard to get in the Om zone when your mat smells less than zen. Luckily, cleaning yoga and workout mats is a breeze with your Laundress toolkit! Open cell mats (you’ll notice a textured surface) are designed to absorb sweat and provide better traction for hot workouts like Bikram yoga. These mats should be wiped down thoroughly after every use with a 50/50 Scented Vinegar and water solution in a Glass Spray Bottle. The vinegar will remove sweat buildup while the No. 247 fragrance helps keep the “vinegary” smell at bay, instead leaving behind a fresh, herbal scent. To give open cell mats an extra deep clean, fill a tub with warm water and 1-2 capfuls of Sport Detergent. Submerge the mat and let soak for 20-30 minutes before thoroughly rinsing and allowing to air dry.

Non-absorbent, closed cell mats can be cleaned using the vinegar solution, or the versatile Surface Cleaner. These mats typically should not be immersed in water, so make sure to wipe them clean once you’ve finished up your last vinyasa! Always let mats fully dry over a drying rack or shower curtain before rolling them back up for storage to help prevent mold and bacteria from growing.

Weights, Bands, Jump Ropes and Foam Rollers

Your Toolkit: Surface Cleaner, Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, Sport Detergent

Have you ever reached for a weight in the gym just to find that it’s still sticky from your last session? Yuck! There are lots of benefits to keeping exercise gear at home, and smaller items like weights and bands are easily cleaned using some Laundress muscle. For hand weights and kettlebells, spray clean with Surface Cleaner or your Scented Vinegar solution, and wipe down with a Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth. Always ensure metal weights are thoroughly dried before storing to prevent rust.

To deep clean resistance bands and jump ropes, fill a Wash Basin with warm water and 1 capful of Sport Detergent. Let soak for a few minutes, then rinse clean and let air dry. Never dry items like bands or mats in the sun, as it can deteriorate the material over time. If you use your bands in a pool, be sure to rinse off the chlorinated water after each use. Finally, foam rollers can be sprayed with Surface Cleaner for a deep clean. To keep odors at bay, simply rinse the roller after stretching sessions, or spray with our odor-dissolving Sport Spray.
