Ring Around The Collar Stains

How to remove ring around the collar on cotton

The Solution

"Ring around the collar" stains are caused by a combination of sweat and personal care products that build up in your garment over time. Eventually, it can manifest as a dingy or sweat-stained look to the shirt. A typical frustration for dress-shirt wearers, learn how to treat collar stains at home with the right solutions!

What you'll need to treat ring around the collar stains:

Pro Tip: Before beginning, check your shirt's tag. Most dress shirts are suitable for at-home washing, but if the tag reads "dry clean only", it's best to leave it to the professionals.

How To Pretreat

Step One

Apply an enzymatic stain treatment like Stain Solution all over the stained portion of the collar. Since dress shirts are also prone to underarm staining, it's a good idea to apply a few drops to those areas as well to target sweat.

Step Two

Work the solution into the collar using a damp Stain Brush. Gently scrub, using circular motions.

Step Three

For older, tougher collar stains, soak before washing. Fill a sink or wash basin with tepid water, and let the shirt soak for 30 minutes. Apply more Stain Solution, then toss in the wash. After pretreating and soaking, rinse hands well with water.

  • Next, reach for a stain-fighting detergent like Signature Detergent, made with a powerful bio-based enzyme complex.
  • Launder according to manufacturer instructions. Most dress shirts are best washed using a normal cycle with cold water.
  • Remove promptly from the machine to check stains.

Dry & Finish

Stained or not, dress shirts should always be hung dry for best results. Gently smooth out the fabric by hand while damp to help cut down on wrinkling. Iron or steam for a crisp finish!
