How To

5 Ways to Freshen Garments Between Washings

Aug 31, 2020

Oh “the chair!” Most everyone has one. It’s that place of purgatory for clothes that have been worn before but could be worn again. They’re not dirty enough for the laundry basket but also not closet material. The first step in moving past this heap is acceptance. Many items in your wardrobe don’t need to be washed after each wear, so this limbo state is perfectly normal. In fact, over-laundering may compromise the lifespan of many pieces like denim, wool, and cashmere. Items from “the chair” can be moved confidently back to the closet these quick tips and tricks for freshening them in between washes.

how to steam

Steaming is one of the easiest, most natural ways to freshen up a previously worn piece. On high heat, steam works to kill germs and bacteria, which can in term eliminate odors. Add a capful of Ironing Water to infuse with our Classic scent. If you don’t own a steamer, you can achieve similar results by setting an iron to the “steam” setting and hovering your iron over the item. Be sure not to make contact with the item as pressing some fabrics like wool may crush and damage fibers.

fabric freshen

Spraying garments with one of our antibacterial, nontoxic fabric sprays is a quick and easy way to freshen up. Each adds a fresh scent while eliminating odors. We recommend the Wool & Cashmere Spray for sweaters, suits, scarves, blankets, and other knits. The Cedar scent naturally repels moths and other critters. Delicate Spray is perfect for lingerie, hosiery, and items labeled “dry clean only” like silks and chiffons. Sport Spray is formulated for activewear including gear like yoga mats, helmets, and gym bags. Lastly, Fabric Fresh Classic works perfectly for just about anything from linens to denim to outerwear.

cashmere brush

Eliminate lint and give your garments a refresh with regular brushing. Use our Cashmere Brush to remove any accumulated lint from wool outerwear and sweaters by gently sweeping it across your garment. By doing so, you’ll release the fabrics’ natural oils which helps to stimulate and rejuvenate the yarns. For cotton shirts and more delicate pieces like silks and synthetics, we recommend an even gentler touch using our Clothing & Upholstery Brush to remove lint, fuzz, pills, hair, and fur, leaving your item looking neat and clean.

delicate clothing hanging on a laundry line

Simple yet effective, giving your garments room to breathe can keep them fresh. If you don’t have access to an outdoor drying line, simply hanging pieces in an open area outside of your closet can do the trick. You can also use your dryers’ “air dry” setting to fluff up your fabrics while removing lint and dust. Because no heat is used during the process, there’s no need to worry about your garment shrinking. For delicate pieces, we recommend inserting them into one of our Mesh Bags before adding to the dryer to protect intricate details and prevent snags.

fabric fresh and classic scented drawer liners

Proper storage in between wears can go a long way and requires minimal effort with our drawer liners, which can also be used for shelving. Choose Cedar Drawer Liners for woolens and knits. The blend of woody, sweet, and spicy notes adds a delicate scent while cedar keeps critters away. Our Classic Scented Drawer Liners add a fresh laundry scent to linens, intimates, and other clothing items.
