How To Clean Coffee/Espresso Machines & Tea Pots

Some days (ok, most days), we're fueled by a strong cup of coffee. So, you need to know how to clean espresso & coffee machines. With a fresh pot available all day, to say we put the coffee maker at The Laundress to good use is an understatement. Keeping your machine clean means a better brew and we wouldn't want anything less. Follow our guide to cleaning nearly ever vessel made for delivering caffeinated beverages, including the French Press, espresso machine, coffee machine, and tea kettle.

GATHER THESE TOOLS: Scented Vinegar, Copper Cloth, Dish Detergent, Glass & Crystal Cleaning Brush

STEP 1: Disassemble the coffee maker, removing the rubber seal and strainer from the base.

STEP 2: Fill with Scented Vinegar and hot water, allowing to soak to remove buildup.

STEP 3: If there are residual stains or excess buildup, use the Copper Cloth to scrub the strainer, rubber seal, and top and bottom halves of the coffee maker. Allow the mixture to sit on these parts. If you do not have this, proceed to handwash.

STEP 4: Handwash the pieces with the Dish Detergent and the Glass & Crystal Cleaning Brush, rinse well with cold water, and let air dry.

GATHER THESE TOOLS: Lint-Free Cleaning Cloths, Scented Vinegar

STEP 1: Wash any removable parts in warm, soapy water and dry.

STEP 2: Wipe the surface of the machine with a Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, paying special attention to any areas where espresso granules may have collected.

STEP 3: Put a mug under the spout. Fill the reservoir with ½ Scented Vinegar and ½ water and start the brew cycle without an espresso capsule or K-Cup. Repeat until the reservoir is empty, discarding the mug contents each time.

STEP 4: Repeat the process in step 3 but this time, fill the reservoir entirely with cold water only.

STEP 5: When the brewing process is complete, dry the inside with the Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth. Once dry, give the outside of your machine a good wipe down with the Surface Cleaner and the Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth.

GATHER THESE TOOLS: Scented Vinegar Dish Detergent, Glass & Crystal Cleaning Brush

STEP 1: Rinse the carafe in cold water and fill with one part Scented Vinegar and two parts warm water.

STEP 2: Pour the mixture into the coffee makers’ reservoir and turn the maker on to brew a pot.

STEP 3: Once the brewing cycle is complete, shut off your coffee maker and allow the vinegar mixture to sit in the carafe for about 15 minutes. Then, dump the mixture out and repeat with cold water.

STEP 4: Wash the carafe and the filter basket in warm, soapy water and scrub. We recommend using Dish Detergent and Glass & Crystal Cleaning Brush. Rinse with cold water and you’re done.
