Selecting a Water Temperature & Wash Cycle

Looking for a laundry cheat sheet that outlines which water temperature and cycle to select when washing different items with various soil levels? Simply select from below the type of laundry you’re washing and read our recommendations.

Everyday laundry can be washed at any temperature, but these are the only fabrics that can be washed in hot water. Select the water temperature according to the soil level—the dirtier the item, the hotter the water should be. You may also want to wash dark, brightly colored, or brand new items in warm or cold water.

Select a water temperature:
When heavily soiled: Use hot water.
Items that are not very dirty: Use warm water.
When moderately to mildly soiled: Use warm water.
Dark, brightly colored, or brand new items: Use warm or cold water.

Select a wash cycle:
For everyday laundry, choose the Normal cycle.

Note: This cycle may ask you which water temperature you’d like to use. Select a wash cycle and water temperature according to the contents of the load.

So, what setting and temperature do you wash sheets & towels, and how do you wash a dirty towel in your washing machine?

To wash towels, sheets, and other items, select a water temperature:
Use hot water (This temperature is best for items of any color).

Select a wash cycle:
Use the Normal cycle. The normal cycle is the best setting, and wash cycle for washing bath towels and sheets.

Note: This cycle may ask you which water temperature you’d like to use. Select hot water.

Why wash sheets and towels in hot water?
Sheets and towels are often in contact with body oils and body products (like lotion) which can cause staining, discoloration, and dinginess. Washing sheets and towels in warm or cold water will not be effective in removing these elements, no matter what laundry detergent you use. Hot water provides the most thorough and hygienic cleaning.
