Spandex

Also known as elastane or Lycra, spandex is a synthetic fiber with exceptional elasticity. Lightweight and resistant to body acid, it’s blended with natural and synthetic fibers to provide stretch and recovery.

CMSPage_Spandex_Pretreat Pretreat

Because of spandex’s characteristics, it requires special fabric care instructions, and the process starts with treating stains with Stain Solution or the Wash & Stain Bar. Focus on susceptible areas such as underarms, necklines, straps, and waistbands.

Stain Solution is ideal for protein and tannin stains, such as wine, coffee, ink, grass, urine, blood, and old, set-in stains such as pit stains.

The Wash & Stain Bar works the material to remove dirt, grease, oil, and makeup.

To remove odors, presoak the item for 30 minutes in cool water mixed with ¼ cup of Scented Vinegar.

CMSPage_Spandex_Handwash Handwash

Handwashing is the best and safest method for washing swimwear and intimates. Add 2 capfuls or a squirt of Sport Detergent to a washbasin or sink filled with cool water. For intimates, use Delicate Wash.

Submerge the item and gently agitate the water with your hands to evenly distribute soap. Soak for up to 30 minutes.

Rinse well by running cool water through the item until the water is no longer soapy. Do not wring. Instead, press the water out of the item.

CMSPage_Spandex_Machine Wash Machine Wash

Machine washing is appropriate for activewear and durable spandex blends. Turn the item inside out, and place it in a Mesh Washing Bag to preserve elasticity and prevent tearing and snagging in the machine.

Select the delicate cycle and use cool water. Add the appropriate amount of Sport Detergent according to the machine and load size.

For especially sweaty and dirty items, such as athletic uniforms and sportswear, use hot water and add 2 capfuls of All-Purpose Bleach Alternative.

CMSPage_Spandex_Dry & Finish Dry & Finish

Always air-dry activewear and swimwear! The high heat of the dryer will reduce the fabric’s elasticity and moisture-wicking properties.

Spritz with Sport Spray to remove odors and freshen everything from sneakers, gym bags, and lockers to yoga mats and sports equipment. For intimates, use Delicate Spray.

CMSPage_Spandex_Store Store

Use the Hotel Laundry Bag to keep sweaty workout gear separate from the clean, dry items in your bag.

Always store items clean. We recommend storing in a breathable cotton storage bag to protect items from bugs.

Storing in plastic encourages yellowing and can trap mildew-causing moisture, a prime environment for bugs.

All techniques are based on textile science. Not all garments perform and react as science would predict.
