Weekend Travel Series: Upstate New York

Jul 8, 2016

What better way to make a quick getaway from the sizzling summer heat of the city than to travel upstate to Hudson Valley? From horseback riding at The Stables at MiraBella to dining at Bonfiglio & Bread LTD, read Gwen and Lindsey’s recommendations for a weekend well had!

What To Pack

For a short jaunt, Gwen always brings her monogrammed Beckel Tote, Malin & Goetz SPF 30 Face Moisturizer, and a relaxed summer dress for shopping and cocktails. Upstate is always super low key!

Lindsey packs her Devon Pro VX Paddock boots for horseback riding, a white Polo shirt, lightweight jodhpurs, jeans shorts, and The Laundress Sport Spray of course!

Where To Stay

Lindsey loves staying at Glenmere, one of America's finest country homes. Less than 50 miles out of the city, it's the definition of refined relaxation with critically acclaimed dining and a full-service spa with a bath house.

Gwen opts for staying at cute inns in the area - there are heaps! Last year, however, she and her husband were lucky enough to stay with longtime Laundress friends Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz of Malin & Goetz.

Where To Eat

Lunch at Bonfiglio & Bread LTD is a MUST - Gwen loves their baked goods and they serve up the tastiest breakfasts, too!

Local farmer's markets are the best places to pick up fresh produce - there are dairy farms and orchards ALL over the state that Lindsey loves to visit!

What To Do

Lindsey is all about spending time outdoors - from hiking the Appalachian Trail at Harriman State Park in the spring to horseback riding in the summer to apple picking at Ochs Orchard in the fall, there's never a lull in activities. Lindsey and Chloe both go horseback riding at The Stables at Mirabella - and there's tons of other barns and trails throughout Hudson Valley for lessons and riding. Another fun weekend activity she and her family partake in is busting out their projector to host outdoor movies for the neighborhood kids (and adults)! You can also rent projectors from the local library.

Gwen enjoys an antique run while visiting Hudson Valley - all the great stores run along Warren Street. Red Chair and Gottlieb Gallery are two of her favorites. She also recommends stopping by Olana, Frederic Church's Masterpiece. Olana hosts annual exhibitions on the second floor of the main house. This summer it's "Capturing the Cosmos: Frederic Church painting Humbolt's Vision of Nature" and "Mystery Box: Student Artists at Work" among others.
