Stain Mistakes You’re Probably Making, According To Our Founders

Aug 5, 2021

Stains. They’re a serious nuisance but they happen to everyone. The right products will remove them easily, but we often see our customers commit “stain crimes” that make spots worse and the removal process more tricky. Here are the most common ones we see, and what to do instead.

YOUR TOOLKIT: Stain Solution, Wash & Stain Bar, Stain Brush, Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, All-Purpose Bleach Alternative, Wash Tub Basin

You Treat Your Stain With Whatever’s Around
If you stain an item while you’re out, avoid the temptation of using paper napkins and club soda to blot it. It’s better to wait to treat the stain at home where you have the right products, tools, and time to treat it. (We recommend coupling your stain treatment with our natural-haired Stain Brush or gentle Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth.) That frantic attempt can end up making a bigger mess, leaving you with traces of paper lint on the item… and an even larger stain.

You Use The Wrong Kind Of Stain Remover
Stains can be broken up into two categories: Tannin-based or oil-based. We formulated our stain removers to tackle both. Stain Solution is for protein-based stains like red wine, coffee, tea, or grass and Wash & Stain Bar tackles oil-based stains like pit stains, ring around the collar, makeup, and salad dressing.

You Don’t Pretreat Stains Before Washing Them
This is key to removing spots! It’ll also be easier to remove any staining if you pretreat before throwing the item in the wash. Use Stain Solution or Wash & Stain Bar and work into the stain with your fingers or a Stain Brush. Soak for up to 30 minutes in warm water (cool for woolens, silk, and delicate synthetics), then wash. For added stain removing power for everyday laundry, you can add a capful of color-safe All-Purpose Bleach Alternative to the soak water.

You Think It’s Impossible To Remove Old Stains
The right products will remove even old, set-in stains. A good trick is after pretreating with Stain Solution or Wash & Stain Bar, hold the stained spot under water pressure (like a faucet) to help drive the treatment into the fabric. Follow by soaking the item in a Wash Tub Basin or sink for up to 30 minutes and repeat as necessary before laundering.

You Bring Stained Items To The Dry Cleaner
Bringing stained items to the dry cleaner can actually set the stain in further because of all the chemicals and heat they use. Plus, up to 90% of fabrics considered dry clean are washable, so save the trip and your item. Learn how to wash dry clean items at home.
