How To

Many Hands Lighten the Load | 6 Values Little Helpers Learn

Mar 17, 2020

Everyone can remember a time growing up where they didn’t want to clean their room or put away the dishes, especially when our friends were playing outside. Whether we liked it or not, chores at an early age had its benefits. We’re sharing our top 6 motivating reasons WHY it’s important to include kids in household tasks.

"It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do themselves that will make them successful human beings." - Ann Landers

1. Show them the value of a home

Often, kids don’t realize how much time and care goes into maintaining their safe haven. All they know is their blanket stays warm and fluffy, their favorite cup is on deck ready for every meal, and their socks are perfectly paired and stocked in the dresser. When you include your little one in daily chores, it teaches them what it takes to create the clean and cozy environment they love coming home to.

2. Teach them responsibility

Their adult life may seem like worlds away, but they are going to grow up fast and it will make you feel comforted knowing they can handle their responsibilities. Holding kids accountable for their own chores will demonstrate the consequences they may run into if they don’t see a chore through completion. No clean room? No friends over. They’ll adapt a sense of pride once they can say they finished a chore on their own.

3. Improve time management skills

This skill will transcend from their daily to-do list to their biggest milestones. Sooner or later, they will be on their way to college where prioritizing their workload will be their saving grace. Instilling time management at a young age will put them one step ahead in achieving their goals.

4. Teach empathy and compassion

Until they are on their own, it is difficult for your little ones to understand how much effort is involved in the upkeep of a home. Making them a part of big and small chores will not only alleviate some of your workload, but will teach kids to appreciate the work that goes into a tidy home.

5. Encourage self-reliance and team skills

A child’s first ever team is their family. Members of the family rely on one another to get things done around the house. Foster an environment where kids can learn how to support other people before they enter the workforce where mistakes aren’t as easily forgiven.

6. Increase family bonding time

Chores and playtime are not mutually exclusive! Cleaning together can be a moment where the happy memories are made. Learn 8 ways to make cleanup time fun and encourage kids to pitch in.
