Aug 11, 2021

The only thing that leaves us feeling unwell about nourishing, wellness-promoting foods (Avocado! Coconut oil! Turmeric!) are the tough stains they can leave on our fabrics. Allow our pro-proven, plant-derived stain tricks to guide and ground you. Nama-stain to namaste!

Avocado

This versatile green fruit adds creamy deliciousness to any meal, but the healthy fats it’s packed with can lead to some gnarly, oily, stains. To the rescue: Our oil and grease-removing Wash & Stain Bar! First, run the bar under warm water and work it into a lather using the Stain Brush. Next, use the brush (your fingers work too) to massage the lather into the stain, working in small circular motions to help coax the discoloration out. If you’re using the Stain Brush, don’t worry about being too harsh here—its natural, densely packed bristles won’t pull at threads. Now allow the item to soak in the warmest water the fabric can tolerate (AKA cold for delicates and knits, hot for cottons, linens, and heavy synthetics) for 5-30 minutes before washing with a fabric specific detergent. If the stain landed on your couch or other upholstery, skip this step and blot away the soap with a damp Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, then use a dry one to remove as much moisture as possible.

Oils

When your coconut oil hair mask leaves its mark on your silk pillowcase, there’s no need to go nuts: Grab that handy Wash & Stain Bar and Stain Brush, and get to pretreating. The bar’s formula effectively lifts oil and grease-based stains from all fabrics, even silk and wool, and is perfect for removing spots caused by coconut oil, face creams, or even nut butters and salad dressing. Run the bar under warm water and use the Stain Brush or your fingers to massage into a lather. Work the lather into the entire area of the oil stain, and let the item soak for up to 30 minutes before washing according to fabric type. Generally, warmer washing temperatures really help to lift oil stains, but be sure to stick to Delicate Wash and cold water for delicate fabrics like silk or satin.

For coconut oil or other greasy stains on more durable cottons, linens, or synthetic fabrics in lighter colors, sprinkle a pinch of All-Purpose Bleach Alternative beads on top of the Wash & Stain Bar lather for a boost of brightening, stain removing power! Dip your Stain Brush into hot water and work both formulas into the fabric, allowing a paste to form. Let the item soak for 30 minutes in hot water and one capful of All-Purpose Bleach Alternative beads. The soaking process helps loosen the oil from the fabric, and can be an effective method for older, set-in stains. After 30 minutes, proceed with laundering using an everyday washing formula, like our Signature Detergent!

Pro Tip: Never apply All-Purpose Bleach Alternative to delicates like silk or wool.

Smoothies & Juices

From green goddess blends to acaí bowls, smoothies are nourishing treats, but their color-rich ingredients can cause very noticeable stains when spilled. That said, when things go less than smooth with your smoothie and it ends up on your new yoga set, grab Stain Solution! This concentrated liquid pretreatment is designed to remove color-rich, protein and tannin based stains from all fabrics, and is the perfect tool to combat smoothie stains. To start, pour a drop of the solution over the stained area and work it in with the Stain Brush. If you notice the color of the stain start to change, don’t worry: That just means the enzyme solution is starting to work its magic. For older or heavier stains, soak the item for 30 minutes before laundering according to fabric type. For fresh stains, simply toss in the washer and select a fabric-appropriate detergent and setting. For example, to launder workout clothing made of stretchy synthetic fabrics, wash using Sport Detergent and a cool setting.

Dark Chocolate

Just like smoothies, dark chocolate is a nice way to add some sweetness to a healthy lifestyle. But when things go dark—umm is that chocolate on my favorite couch cushions?!—opt for Stain Solution. Dark chocolate is mostly a tannin stain (less milk content means less stain-causing proteins) and can be treated accordingly using our Stain Solution pretreatment. To treat, remove any excess chocolate chunks using a damp Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, then squirt a bit of Stain Solution over the stain. Work in using a Stain Brush, and launder accordingly.

Matcha

As far as coffee alternatives go, matcha is definitely our go-to. From lavender matcha lattes to matcha mochi cake, this green powder is basically fairy dust. However, a little goes a loooong way, and the powder can be quite messy if you’re DIY-ing your caffeine fix at home. Matcha is a color-rich stain that is easily addressed using our Stain Solution: Simply apply the concentrated liquid, massage in using a Stain Brush or your fingers, and launder accordingly. Keep in mind that matcha latte stains will contain a protein element from the milk (yes, even oat milk has protein), and should be addressed with cold water to avoid further staining.

Turmeric

This aromatic spice has a long history as an Ayurvedic remedy, and has many uses in cooking and even fabric dyeing… which says a lot about its staining abilities! Its golden hue can cause bright stains on both clothing and kitchen surfaces. Heed our sage advice and target spots on fabric with Stain Solution, soak as needed, and launder in the hottest water the garment can tolerate. For turmeric spills on countertops of any kind—including marble and quartz—spritz with Surface Cleaner and wipe away using a Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth. The key to preventing countertop stains is to address spills as quickly as possible: The longer they sit, the more likely they are to cause tough-to-remove discoloration.
