How To

How to Clean Blinds & Curtains

Nov 5, 2019

They provide shade and privacy from peeping neighbors, but they’re also magnets for dust, dirt, and mites, which doesn’t look nice and isn’t great for you, either. Here, we shed some light on the fast, easy way to keep them clean.

Your Toolkit
Duster for Small Spaces, Clean Home Duo, Wash & Stain Bar, Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, Mesh Bag, Delicate Wash, Jiffy Steamer

For Vinyl, Aluminum, and Wood Blinds:

Step 1: Start Here
Lower your blinds. Wood blinds can be fully shut and vinyl and aluminum blinds should be tilted downwards, but not closed completely.

Step 2: Don’t Forget To Dust
Use the Duster for Small Spaces to remove surface dust and dirt from each slat. Next, flip blinds to the opposite side and repeat.

Step 3: Clean With a Damp Cloth
Dampen a Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth (if you have wood blinds, make sure not to wet the cloth too much) with some Scented Vinegar and wipe them down. This will lift extra dirt and dust plus grease and residue, too.

Step 4: Vacuum
Open up the blinds to allow excess moisture to dissipate. Vacuum up any excess dust on the slats, windowsill, or floor with a soft brush attachment.

For Fabric Blinds:

Step 1: Prep Your Blinds
Fully lower blinds. Then vacuum both sides of the shades from top to bottom with a soft brush attachment and a low suction setting.

Step 2: Treat Stains
Lather the Wash & Stain Bar with warm water and work it directly into stains until they’ve dissolved. Dampen one end of a Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth and remove excess product, then dab with the dry end to sop up moisture.

Note: We recommend dusting blinds at least every other week to reduce mite allergens and cleaning them completely every six months.

For Curtains:

Step 1: Vacuum Dust
Before cleaning, remove dirt and dust with a small handheld vacuum or your regular vacuum’s nozzle attachment.

Step 2: Wash With Key Products
Curtains are cumbersome to hand wash, so go ahead and throw them in the washing machine. First, remove all hardware from the fabric. If your curtains fit, place them in a protective Mesh Bag. Add our Delicate Wash directly to drum, then wash with cool water on the delicate cycle. If your curtains are white or light in color, use hot water and two capfuls of All-Purpose Bleach Alternative for a big ol’ boost of brightening and whitening.

Step 3: Air Dry
Hang curtains to dry or lay them flat on a drying rack.

Step 4: Do Some Weekly Upkeep
Vacuuming your curtains weekly (or every other week at the very least) will remove dirt, dust, and mite buildup. Steaming every other week will soften any wrinkles and reduce allergenic dust.
