How To

Brighter Bedding & Towels in 10 Minutes

Apr 23, 2021

Experience the resort-level luxury of crisp white bedding and vibrant, fluffy towels at home by fighting dinginess, yellowness, and drab on your linens everytime you wash. These speedy, no-fuss steps take 10 minutes or less and deliver fast, vibrant results.

Your linen closet toolkit: Whites Detergent, Darks Detergent, Fabric Conditioner, Make Messes Kit, Scented Vinegar, Stain Brush, Dryer Balls Set of 3, Crease Release, Delicate Wash

Step 1: Prep + Pretreat Linens

Bright, plush linens start with sorting. Separate sheets and towels from your other laundry and set aside to wash separately. This will avoid bunching and tangling during the wash cycle. Next, scan linens for stains and apply the appropriate stain products.

Melt away makeup, body lotion, self-tanner, hair masks, and even pet paw marks with a few swipes of a formula designed for oil and grease stains like our Wash & Stain Bar. Run the bar under warm water, then work it into a lather using your fingers or a damp Stain Brush. Using gentle, circular motions, brush the lather into stained spots.

Spilled a little morning coffee (or bedtime wine...) on your sheets? Target with Stain Solution, which is formulated for color-rich, protein, and tannin-based stains, including those from body oils and fluids like sweat stains. Squirt a few drops of the super-concentrated liquid over stains and apply using your fingers or the Stain Brush.

Tip: Certain acne treatments, such benzoyl peroxide, can bleach towels and pillowcases. If you use them frequently, opt for white bedding and towels to avoid pesky bleach marks.

Step 2: Skip the Strip & Brighten Like This

Heard of laundry stripping? Our plant-derived detergents effectively clean without leaving behind dulling buildup, so if you wash with us, you can skip this trend! (BTW: Laundry stripping is harsh on linens and towels, and can lead to damage in the long run.)

all-purpose bleach alternative

If you’re already facing dull, dingy linens, add 1-2 capfuls of whites and color safe, chlorine-free All-Purpose Bleach Alternative to your wash routine. Once your linens are in the washing machine, sprinkle two capfuls of All-Purpose Bleach Alternative directly into the drum (for top loaders), add detergent (more on that in the next step), and wash using a long cycle with a hot water setting. These powerful, hot-water activated beads will get to work dissolving stains, lifting grime, and revealing brighter, crisper fabrics.

Are your towels not as absorbent as they once were? This is often due to overusing fabric softeners, which can build up on the surface of the towel and repel water. To help them regain absorbency, add ½ cup of Scented Vinegar to the drum along with your preferred detergent and select a long, hot water cycle. This step will help to remove buildup, banish lingering odors, and naturally soften towels without leaving deposits on the fabric.

Step 3: Rub a Dub Dub!

Wash with Whites Detergent to brighten whites or lighter colored linens, and Darks Detergent to preserve items with rich, deep colors and patterns. These everyday washing formulas contain hardworking enzymes that fight stains while leaving a luxurious and lingering “clean laundry smell” behind. (If you have silk sheets, Opt for Delicate Wash.)

If you love extra soft and cozy bedding, give linens the full spa treatment and add 2-3 capfuls of smoothing, static, and wrinkle-releasing Fabric Conditioner Classic to the wash along with your detergent. Skip this step for towels, or use every 3-4 washes only. Our plant-based formula is designed to soften without leaving heavy deposits, but using it too frequently can affect absorbency.

Dust, sweat, and allergen buildup on linens can all cause odors and skin irritation and leave fabrics feeling less than lavish. Bid them bon voyage by selecting a warm to hot temperature, and a long, deep wash cycle every time you wash. If sheets are silk, go with cool water.

Tip: While bed linens can be washed every week, pillowcases can be washed or replaced daily or every few days to help prevent the spread of bacteria on the face. If acne or allergies are a concern for you, a daily change of pillowcases can be a lifesaver! Consider washing pillows 1-2 times a season by following this easy guide.

Step 4: Air Things Out

Shake it out! Give towels and linens a good shake to help fluff fibers and encourage an even drying process before tossing them in the dryer. For bed linens specifically, select a lower heat cycle to help preserve them and ward off fabric damage. Towels can take the heat with a medium or permanent press setting.

Both linens and towels alike benefit from some wool Wool Dryer Balls. These help pummel the fabric during a tumble cycle, leaving them soft and fluffy, not stiff or crunchy. Looking for an eco-conscious alternative to machine drying? Choose line drying for bed linens, and harness the natural brightening, antibacterial properties of the sun! Once dry, give items a few mists of Crease Release to soften wrinkles and infuse with some fresh scent.

Tip: If placing linens directly on the bed after washing, remove them from the dryer while still slightly damp to alleviate wrinkling. Place on the bed and spray with Crease Release, using your hands to smooth out the fabric for a perfect finish!
