How To

How-To | Clean Pen & Marker Messes

Jul 25, 2017

When your resident artists think outside the box, you’re bound to find pen and marker messes follow suit. Ballpoint, permanent, and colored markers can set off even the most seasoned Laundress (or Launderer’s) alarm bells. But, don’t toss those items yet. We’ve got a how-to for persevering through the toughest of pen stains.

The Permanent Marker Fix

The mack daddy of all marker stains requires a special touch.

GATHER THESE TOOLS:

Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, All-Purpose Bleach Alternative, Stain Brush, Stain Solution

Note: how-to is for cotton, durable or synthetic pieces

STEP 1:

Lay the item flat and place a Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth underneath the stain to prevent ink from transferring. If the ink stain is still wet, dab dry with your Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth.

STEP 2:

Apply Stain Solution directly to the marker stain. Then, sprinkle All-Purpose Bleach Alternative on the Stain Solution to create a powerful paste. Work the solution into the fabric using your finger or our Stain Brush. If you’re working on upholstery, repeat until satisfied, then blot with a wet Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth and allow to air dry. If working with laundry safe items, proceed to step 3.

STEP 3:

If the stain is still visible, pour boiling water from a kettle onto the affected area. Pour from a safe height so the water won’t splash you. You can also use hot water from a faucet set to the highest water pressure level. The force of the water helps add muscle to your stain removal efforts.

STEP 4:

Should you find the stain still appears, fill a basin or sink with warm water and add 1 capful of All-Purpose Bleach Alternative. Add your item to the mixture and allow to soak for 30 minutes. Then, remove and rinse with cool water.

STEP 5:

Repeat steps 1-3 until the stain is no longer visible. Otherwise, launder as usual.

Ballpoint Pen & Colored Markers

Follow these steps when pens pop in pockets or markers make their way off pages.
