How To Clean Mohair

Pretreat

When washing mohair, always pretreat stains using your preferred stain treatment for woolens. Mohair is sensitive to harsh cleaners and scrubbing, so it's important to use only gentle products and methods. If you're unsure whether your mohair can be washed, first test in an inconspicuous spot for water exposure and color bleeding.

Handwash

Hand washing is the best and safest method for washing mohair. Mohair is sensitive to water temperature and agitation and can shrink if not treated properly.

First, add the appropriate amount of Wool & Cashmere Shampoo to a wash basin or sink filled with cool water.

Submerge the mohair item and gently agitate the water with your hands to evenly distribute soap. Soak for up to 30 minutes.

Rinse well by running cool water through your garment until the water is no longer soapy. Do not wring, as it can warp the fit of your mohair garment. Instead, press the water out of the item.

Machine Wash

First, turn your mohair item inside out and place in a Mesh Bag to add a layer of protection during the wash.

Select the woolens or delicate cycle on the washing machine, making sure the water temperature is cold and the spin cycle is on low.

Add the proper dose of Wool & Cashmere Shampoo based on the machine type and load size.

Remove your mohair item promptly from the washing machine to reduce creasing.

Dry & Finish

Lay the mohair item flat in its natural shape on a drying rack or clean towel. Do not put it in the dryer!

Expedite drying by laying the item flat on a clean towel. With the item in its original shape, roll it up in the towel (like a sleeping bag) to draw out excess water.

After rolling, lay flat and gently reshape to the desired construction, carefully smoothing the fabric with your hands. This helps to ensure an even, smooth finish.

When drying, avoid direct sunlight and heat sources, such as the radiator, because they can yellow, shrink, or damage woolens.

Never hang wet mohair, as it can warp the delicate yarns.

Store

Knits like mohair should be stored folded to prevent stretching or distorting. Store jackets and suits using a solid structured hanger.

Mohair is susceptible to insect damage. Always store items clean, placing inside cotton or canvas storage bags with a zippered closure.
