Things We Love: Sustainable Brands

With a growing awareness around climate change and environmental impact, there is a movement towards more sustainable initiatives. And while there is no single leap to perfection, the good news is there are many paths you can take to become more conscious: extending the life of belongings, upcycling, fair trade practices, manufacturing powered by renewable resources, cleaner ingredients, conservation efforts, or animal welfare, just to name a few.

We’ve got to give credit to some of the pioneers who have paved the way for doing better for the environment and future generations like, Patagonia, who is committed to using business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis; Seventh Generation, who in their mission to “nurture the health of the next seven generations” was one of the first companies to launch recycled paper products and prioritize renewable ingredients; Eileen Fisher with its conscious supply chain and human rights initiatives for women and girls, and TOMS, who is building a better tomorrow with their One For One charity program. They have given almost 100 million pair of shoes to people in need.

These brands have likely played a large part in inspiring other companies, companies that have since weaved sustainability into their DNA, allowing and empowering customers to make more mindful choices when it comes to the health of our planet and humankind. Here, some of those brands that are inspiring us to make better choices right now.

1. LINT-FREE CLEANING CLOTH | THE LAUNDRESS

We’re all about forgoing single-use resources whenever possible (in this case, paper towels) in favor of items you can reuse again and again. We use these machine-washable cloths for everything from dusting to stain removal to surface cleaning.

2. RECYCLED CASHMERE SOFT WRAP | CUYANA

Fewer, better things is Cuyana's mission statement—and one we think everyone should aim to live by. The brand promises their thoughtfully sourced and designed pieces (like this cozy wrap made from recycled cashmere fibers) will last you ages… meaning more time for you to enjoy them and less likely they’ll end up in a landfills.

3. COUNTERSUN MINERAL SUNSCREEN | BEAUTYCOUNTER

We know you’re well-versed on the benefits of sunscreen, but did you know that some formulas can erode the coral reef and harm aquatic life when they enter our waterways? This zinc-oxide based one by Beautycounter, a brand that advocates for transparency and better-for-you ingredients in personal care products, is our favorite reef-safer alternative.

4. THE DEWY SKIN CREAM | TATCHA

Doing good has never looked better, thanks to this lush, skin-plumping cream. Each purchase of a full-size Tatcha product goes to Room to Read, a program that provides education and resources to underprivileged girls and women across the globe.

5. RE-EDITION 2005 NYLON SHOULDER BAG | PRADA

We love how an established, luxury fashion house can serve as inspiration for all heritage brands to think forward by reinventing an iconic product in a sustainable way. This bag is part of Prada's Re-Nylon initiative, which uses recyclable materials like plastic and fishing nets retrieved from the ocean to produce their pieces (just like this chic one!).

6. FASHIONOPOLIS | BY DANA THOMAS

Here’s a wake up call: the average piece of clothing is worn only seven times before being thrown away, and 87% ends up in a landfill or incinerated; only 1% is recycled. In her latest book, author Dana Thomas sheds light on how fast fashion is taking a toll on our lives and our planet.

7. OUT WEST DUO | THE LAUNDRESS X JOHN MAYER

This equal parts spicy and musky detergent and fabric-freshening set was made in collaboration with John Mayer, but that’s not the only reason why it’s swoon-worthy. 50% of proceeds go to the Montana Association of Land Trusts, which promotes and supports land conservation efforts in Montana.

8. NOW & FOREVER BLOUSE | DAI WEAR

Daiwear is a certified B-Corp brand, meaning it balances purpose and profit by considering the impact of decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. This smart-looking blouse is constructed with eco-certified fibers, so it’s a smart choice for the planet, too.

9. PILLOW | KATEL HOME

When’s the last time you questioned how your pillows are made? This 100% cotton throw is entirely handcrafted by female artisans using traditional weaving, dying, and looming techniques. Each purchase supports these artisans, many of whom are widows or women refugees, and provides them with business training, literacy education programs, and fair living wages.

10. GLASS BOTTLE | THE LAUNDRESS

Sustainability has always been part of our mission. Our bottles are recyclable, but we are constantly working on new ways to improve. Which is exactly why we recently launched glass bottles that can be refilled and reused with our solutions. We love pairing this one with our All Purpose Cleaning Concentrate diluted in water to easily clean everything from tubs to tiles.

11. LE GARCON | FRAME DENIM

Frame’s sustainable denim collection is produced at a sustainable mill for denim fabric, where the re-used styles are made with planet-friendly raw materials, including recycled polyester made from post-consumer plastic bottles and organic cotton.

12. JADE LONG NECKLACE | VESTIAIRE COLLECTION

Behind donating possessions you no longer want or need, reselling is the best way to prevent items from sitting in landfills. Plus, knowing something has had a life (or two or three) before you makes it that much more special, right?

13. FRANCOISE ¾ SLEEVE TOP | AMOUR VERT

Everyone needs a good striped shirt in their life and this is one of the best you’ll find. Besides it being ultra-flattering, the brand carefully considers every single part of their business operations with sustainability at top of mind, from the fibers that are used to the treatment of workers, and whether or not the finished goods can be recycled (they can). Oh, and with every purchase of an Amour Vert t-shirt, the brand plants a tree in North America. They’ve planted 200,000 to date.

14. DRY CLEANING DETOX KIT | THE LAUNDRESS

Our founders Gwen and Lindsey found that up to 90% of fabrics considered dry clean can actually be washed at home. (What!?) In fact, this was one of the main drivers behind the creation of The Laundress. Enter this kit, which lets you ditch chemical-heavy dry clean (bad for you, bad for the environment, bad for your possessions) and cleans everything from silk to cashmere.

15. CIRRUS SUPERSOFT ORGANIC COTTON THROWS | COYUCHI

From organic farming methods and Fair Trade Certified factories to employee education and circular solutions to combat waste, Coyuchi is continually finding new ways to put ethics into action. These cozy blankets are made with eco-conscious cotton fibers in safe manufacturing conditions—warming for your body and your soul.
