Keeping your closet organized can feel like a never-ending chore, but not to worry! Organizing pro and founder of The Virtual Closet Makeover, Shira Gill, is here to help us tame the chaos. Steal her 15 minute tips and transform even the smallest space into a streamlined storage solution that will make finding your stuff (and getting dressed in the morning!) a total breeze.
Contain The Chaos
Closets can be a magnet for clutter and if you’re guilty of stashing random household items here, you’re in good company. Luckily, it takes mere minutes to put these items back where they belong. (Art, diplomas, coffee mugs, kid’s toys, I’m lookin’ at you.)
Stow The Seasonal
Seasonal items such as heavy duvets, winter coats, and bulky sweaters take up precious closet real estate during warmer months. Create space by storing them in a Hanging Storage Bag which protect your items from dust, damage, and friction.
Give Your Clothes a Refresh
Do you have lightly worn clothes draped over a chair, thrown over a hamper, or shoved in the back of your closet? Give these “half-worn” items a quick refresh by shaking them out and hanging them on a hook or hanger. You can also quickly freshen them (without running a full load of laundry) with a quick spritz of Fabric Fresh Classic.
Make It Uniform
Give your random assortment of storage some order with labeled, uniform storage bins made from natural materials. Like cotton or canvas to keep dust, yellowing, and critters away. We especially love these for storing accessories like belts, scarves, and hats. Pro tip: Tuck a few Lavender Pouches inside to keep things fresh.
Ditch The Excess Hangers
Want to know the quickest, easiest way to make space in your closet? Pull out unoccupied hangers and toss them in a tote or labeled bin in the back of your closet until you need them. And now for my favorite tip: To make your closet look like a well-curated boutique, pick one style and color of hanger for your entire wardrobe. It’ll look instantly tidier.
The Quick Clean
Closets can collect a lot of dust, especially when items aren’t frequently worn. Spare yourself the deep clean and take a few minutes to wipe down your shelves with a formula that works on all surfaces, like the Surface Cleaner. It works on everything from finished wood to stainless steel to granite, meaning a couple less bottles under your sink. For kicking dust, the Duster for Small Spaces is perfect for getting to shoes, handbags, and hard to reach corners.
All done! Challenge yourself to this mini makeover, or start slow by trying one or two tips a week. I promise you’ll start to feel better about your space. Remember: A little progress is still progress, and sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference!
