How To Clean Your Trash Can

Discover deodorizing shortcuts and easy, foolproof tricks for cleaning the grimiest part of your kitchen.

Gather These Tools:

Home Cleaning Heroes, All-Purpose Cleaning Concentrate, All-Purpose Bleach Alternative, Scrub Brush, Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth

First things first, take out the trash. Remove the trash bag and any food particles that may have settled at the bottom of your bin.

Soak & Scrub

Pour two capfuls of All-Purpose Cleaning Concentrate, one capful of All-Purpose Bleach Alternative, and two cups of hot water to dilute. Let the solution do the dirty work—allow it to sit for 10 minutes.

Using the Scrub Brush, scrub away any stubborn debris. Pay special attention to any gunk that may have gotten caked onto the bottom and sides of the can.

Rinse Away

Using a large sink, bathtub, or an outdoor hose (if you have access), pour the solution out and thoroughly rinse away any residue. Wipe dry with a Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, or air dry in the sun to help further eliminate mold and mildew.

If any foul smells are lingering, fill the bottom of the can with 1 cup of Scented Vinegar. Add warm water – up to about 2 inches. Swirl the solution around and let sit for 30 minutes. Then, rinse and wipe dry with a Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth. Revel in the fresh, new “can” smell. To keep funky scents at bay, sprinkle two capfuls of All-Purpose Bleach Alternative over the bottom of the bin so that the dry crystals can absorb odors. Replace every week or so.
