How To Clean The Couch, Cushion & Carpets

Raise your hand if your couch serves as a bed, dining table, pet hang out, desk, and play area. (Ours are raised.) It’s safe to say the living room is one of the most frequented areas of your home, so it only makes sense that it needs a reboot every now and again. Our steps make de-staining, cleaning, and refreshing your couch, chair cushions and carpets simple, leaving you more time to sit back and relax.

Your Carpet & Upholstery Necessities: Wash & Stain Bar, Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth, Clothing & Upholstery Brush, Scented Vinegar, Fabric Fresh Classic, All-Purpose Bleach Alternative, Ironing Water

STEP 1:

Spot-Treat Stains

Note, when cleaning upholstery or carpets for the first time, we always recommend testing an inconspicuous area before beginning to clean. You can do this by spot-testing with a Wash & Stain Bar lathered under cool water and a Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth.

Do not continue cleaning if:

  • The water or product leaves a mark or creates discoloration
  • The treated area is cleaner and brighter than the rest of the fabric
  • The fabric ripples or wrinkles

If you see any of the above reactions, do not proceed with spot treating and have a professional clean the item instead.

If there are no adverse reactions, work the Wash & Stain Bar directly to the stain until it begins to lift.

STEP 2:

Sop Up Suds

Remove soap and suds by gently blotting the area with a damp Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth. Be sure to completely remove soap and suds to avoid water marks. Repeat steps 1 and 2 as necessary until the stain disappears.

STEP 3:

Press Dry

Use a clean, dry Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth to thoroughly blot the area dry.

STEP 4:

Vacuum Up Grime

The Clothing & Upholstery Brush acts like a magnet for pet fur, hair, lint, dust, and crumbs, so work it in one direction over couch cushions. We recommend following up with a vacuum and doing this weekly to not only suck up debris, but also dirt, allergens, and dust mites. Use a lightweight, portable hand-held vacuum to go over every square inch of the upholstery, lower sides, and back of the couch. If your couch has removable cushions, remove them and vacuum both sides as well as the underside and frame of the couch.

Vacuum carpets frequently. To absorb unwanted smells, sprinkle All-Purpose Bleach Alternative over the surface of the carpet, allow to sit for up to 30 minutes, then vacuum up completely.

STEP 5:

Eliminate Smells

Pour some Scented Vinegar in a spray bottle and lightly spray upholstery and carpet from at least 6” away to eliminate odors.

STEP 6:

Refresh Between Cleanings

In between cleanings, use a steamer with Ironing Water to remove bacteria and lingering odors. Spritzing your sofa with Fabric Fresh Classic daily will also help to keep odors at bay and infuse fabric with a clean laundry scent.
